Product Overview
This series of 17‑4PH rings and hollow bars are manufactured by hot forging / hot‑piercing extrusion, followed by solution annealing and air quenching to obtain homogeneous martensitic matrix microstructure. Standard delivery is solution‑annealed Condition‑A soft blank ready for rough‑and‑finish CNC machining. Target mechanical properties are achieved by subsequent low‑temperature single‑stage or double‑aging precipitation hardening heat‑treatment.
17‑4PH (UNS S17400 / 1.4542, also known as Type 630) is the most widely‑used copper‑niobium martensitic precipitation‑hardening stainless steel. Strength originates from Cu‑rich precipitates formed during aging treatment. It combines high tensile strength, hardness and acceptable corrosion performance. Multiple aging tempers can be selected: H900 for maximum hardness / wear‑resistance; H1150M double‑aging for optimized toughness and stress‑relief. Widely processed into seamless rolled rings, hollow‑bar sleeves, wear‑ring forgings, valve‑component preforms and high‑strength fastener blanks for oil‑gas, chemical‑processing, general‑mechanical‑equipment and aerospace industries.
Material Grade Characteristics – 17‑4PH (UNS S17400 / 1.4542 Type 630)
- Martensitic precipitation‑hardening stainless steel; strength developed by copper‑niobium precipitate phases after aging; non‑functional in as‑forged state
- Multiple standardized aging tempers (H900 / H1025 / H1075 / H1150 / H1150M) for flexible strength‑toughness tuning for ring‑hollow‑bar components
- Corrosion performance similar to 304 austenitic stainless steel; suitable for atmosphere, fresh‑water and mild‑chloride conditions; not for heavy‑acid severe‑corrosion service
- Very low part distortion upon aging heat‑treatment, great advantage for precision‑tolerance forged ring‑hollow‑bar parts
- Good machinability in Condition‑A solution‑annealed state; welding is possible, post‑weld full solution‑anneal plus aging is required to restore full mechanical‑properties
- Fully magnetic after aging; good wear‑resistance for rotating wear‑ring and bushing‑type hollow‑bar applications

Key Advantages
Multiple standard aging tempers from H900 up to H1150M double‑aging; freely balance high‑hardness wear‑resistance versus impact‑toughness for ring‑hollow‑bar forgings according to component‑design‑requirements.
Low‑temperature precipitation aging produces very small dimensional shift; excellent choice for precision‑machined ring‑hollow‑bar parts that require tight tolerances after final heat‑treatment.
Delivers far higher strength than conventional austenitic stainless steel, with corrosion performance comparable to 304 for atmospheric and fresh‑water service scenarios.
High hardness after H900 / H1025 aging makes it well‑suited for wear‑rings, bushing hollow‑bar and high‑load ring‑shaped mechanical‑equipment parts.
Widely‑qualified material for valve, pump, mechanical‑transmission and general‑industrial forging‑component‑projects with abundant real‑world application data.
